Fire-Resistant Landscaping

Placement and maintenance matter

A maintained landscape

There is no universally “fireproof” plant.

Plant moisture, dead material, spacing, placement and maintenance often matter as much as species. Even plants marketed as fire-resistant can become hazardous when dry, crowded or filled with dead growth.

Better practices

  • Use noncombustible materials closest to structures
  • Remove dead leaves, needles and branches
  • Separate plant groupings and tree canopies
  • Keep branches away from roofs and chimneys
  • Choose plants appropriate for local climate and irrigation

Conditions to avoid

  • Combustible mulch against siding
  • Dense shrubs under windows or decks
  • Dead palm fronds and dry ornamental grasses
  • Continuous hedges leading to structures
  • Unmaintained trees with low branches over brush
