Defensible space & standards

Reduce fuel. Improve access. Prepare for inspection.

A practical guide to structure clearance, vegetation spacing, local standards and ongoing maintenance.

The purpose

Defensible space is managed fuel—not a guarantee.

Defensible space creates a maintained buffer between a structure and surrounding vegetation. It can slow fire spread, reduce flame intensity and give firefighters a safer area to work. It must be paired with home hardening, evacuation planning and ongoing maintenance.

Important: Exact requirements vary by fire protection district, city, county, property type, fire protection plan and the authority having jurisdiction. TerraFuego evaluates the standard that applies to each project.

California framework

The three defensible-space zones.

0–5 ft

Zone 0 — Ember-Resistant Zone

The area immediately next to structures and decks. The objective is to prevent embers from igniting combustible materials touching or very near the building.

  • Remove dead vegetation and debris.
  • Prepare combustible mulch and movable items for removal or relocation.
  • Use appropriately licensed contractors for fencing, hardscape or structural work.

5–30 ft

Zone 1 — Lean, Clean & Green

Reduce dead and dry fuel, maintain plants and create separation between vegetation and combustible items.

  • Remove dead grass, weeds and plant material.
  • Prune and space trees and shrubs.
  • Keep fuel away from decks, stairs and outbuildings.
30–100 ft

Zone 2 — Reduced Fuel Zone

Reduce the amount and continuity of vegetation so fire intensity can decrease before reaching a structure.

  • Mow annual grass to the applicable standard.
  • Create horizontal and vertical spacing.
  • Remove dead vegetation and reduce ladder fuels.

Local standards we plan around

Structure, roadway and neighboring-property clearance.

100 ft

Structures

California and local codes commonly require a fuel modification or defensible-space area extending up to 100 feet around buildings, or to the property line where the parcel is smaller. A fire official may require more based on fuel or topography.

10 ft

Roads & Driveways

Local abatement ordinances and fire standards may require vegetation clearance along each side of improved roads and driveways to preserve access and reduce roadside ignition hazards.

Adjacent Land

Improved Property Lines

Requirements can extend to vegetation on an adjacent parcel when it falls within the required defensible-space distance from an improvement, subject to approval and enforcement by the fire code official. Some local programs use additional property-line clearance standards.

TerraFuego confirms the applicable notice, ordinance, fire code, fire protection plan or agency standard before presenting a compliance-related scope.

Beyond distance alone

Ladder fuels and fuel continuity matter.

Clearance is not only about measuring feet. Grass beneath shrubs, shrubs beneath trees and branches near structures create a vertical pathway that can carry flames upward. Dense, connected vegetation can also carry fire horizontally across a property.

Fire can use vegetation at increasing heights as a continuous path into the canopy and toward a structure.

Compliance support

Mitigating forced abatements.

A vegetation notice can include a specific scope and deadline. Delayed action may lead to enforcement, agency-arranged work and costs assessed to the property, depending on the jurisdiction.

  • Review the notice and deadline
  • Identify the inspecting agency and required standard
  • Complete corrective fuel reduction
  • Provide before-and-after documentation when requested
  • Set a maintenance schedule to reduce repeat violations
